Universal school had its annual fall banquet on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Shalimar Garden.
The restaurant was packed with families gathered to raise money for the school. The ambiance was cozy with glass candles glittering in the dim light.
The evening started with registration and a variety of appetizers ranging from pakoras and samosas to hummus. During this time, the audience were welcomed with Qur’an recitation and a school presentation.
The dinner buffet commenced shortly after the appetizers. The menu contained a variety of delicious Indian/Pakistani dishes like roghan josh, tandoori chicken, butter chicken along with many more mouth watering dishes. After people had some time to mingle over dinner, Omar Siam was recognized with the outstanding service award for his continuous support of Universal School.
The program was mediated by Prof. Faizan Haq. Dr. Abdulhakim Mohamed was invited from Fort Worth, Texas to give a lecture on “Perpetuating the Prophetic Vision”. Dr. Mohamed, who is originally from Detroit, entertained the audience with knowledge while encouraging everyone to donate to this great cause. With his positive attitude and a great sense of humor, many people donated
money and jewelry in exchange for du’as and even kisses for some!
After Dr. Mohamed had raised over $45, 000 for the school, comedian Mo Amer was invited on stage to escalate the laughter that Dr. Mohamed had initiated. Mohammed “Mo” Amer, who is also referred to as ‘the Arab-American Bill Cosby,’ entertained the audience with his relatable Arab jokes. Whether young or old, everybody was holding their stomachs with laughter. The audience even urged him to entertain longer than he was expected to.
Overall, the evening was full of fun and laughter. It was a great opportunity for people to mingle while raising money for Universal school. The fundraiser was successful with over $45,000 raised.
