Clothing, Dignity, and Entrepreneurship for All
Closet for Humanity is a community-run initiative based at 5959 Main Street, Williamsville, NY, dedicated to supporting individuals and families through access to free and affordable clothing, entrepreneurship training, and meaningful volunteer opportunities. The program operates with the support and fiscal partnership of WNY Muslims, a faith-based nonprofit that provides space, volunteers, and organizational oversight. By bringing together people from different faiths, cultures, and backgrounds, Closet for Humanity promotes dignity, self-sufficiency, compassion, and stronger communities across Western New York.
Many families, refugees, immigrants, and other community members in Western New York face financial challenges that make everyday necessities difficult to afford. At the same time, aspiring entrepreneurs may have ideas and motivation but lack the knowledge, mentorship, or resources needed to start and grow a small business. Closet for Humanity responds to both of these needs by providing clothing and essential household items at no or minimal cost while also offering practical business education, mentorship, and opportunities for hands-on experience.
The program is designed to meet immediate needs while helping participants build toward long-term independence. Through recurring donation and distribution events, community members are able to access clothing and household essentials in a welcoming and respectful environment. Volunteers help collect, sort, organize, and distribute donated items, making community participation an important part of the program's success.
Closet for Humanity also supports aspiring entrepreneurs by providing business training, mentorship, and opportunities to participate in community markets. These markets allow local small-business owners to showcase their products, connect with customers, and gain real-world experience. Minimal proceeds from events are reinvested into supplies, marketing, outreach, and future programming so the initiative can continue to grow sustainably.
Youth and community volunteers are an essential part of Closet for Humanity. Young people are encouraged to participate in donation sorting, event setup, training sessions, distribution activities, and public outreach. These opportunities help youth develop leadership, teamwork, communication, and community-service skills while making a meaningful contribution to their local community.
Closet for Humanity is community-led and supported by representatives from several local organizations. Core team members include Faizan Haq of Manage Your Business / Primo MSO, Dr. Riffat Sadiq of WNY Medical, Farina Mirza of WNY Muslims, and Yahya Alrani of Hawk Development. Together, they contribute their expertise, time, and resources to support the planning, operations, partnerships, training, and outreach of the program, with an average commitment of approximately 20 volunteer hours per week.
Regular donation and clothing distribution events are planned at Masjid Al-Eiman, with dates and schedules to be announced. These events will provide opportunities for individuals to donate clothing, volunteer, or receive available clothing and household essentials. Closet for Humanity is also planning a larger fair-style community event that will introduce the program's expanded model, combining clothing distribution, entrepreneurship activities, local vendors, volunteer opportunities, and participation from community organizations and families throughout Western New York.
Looking ahead, Closet for Humanity plans to expand its reach through mobile collection drives and multiple donation drop-off locations across Western New York. The program also aims to increase entrepreneurship workshops, mentorship opportunities, and community-market experiences while developing stronger partnerships with congregations, nonprofits, civic organizations, businesses, and volunteers.
Closet for Humanity welcomes individuals and organizations who want to donate, volunteer, participate, or become community partners. By working together, the initiative aims to address immediate needs while creating pathways toward dignity, opportunity, entrepreneurship, and long-term self-reliance for people throughout Western New York.
