The Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) was a COVID-19 relief initiative launched in 2021 to support individuals and families experiencing financial hardship and housing instability. WNYMuslims collaborated with the City of Buffalo, the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA), and the Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency (BURA) to support outreach and application assistance for eligible residents. Through the program, qualifying households could receive assistance with rental and utility arrears, including up to 12 months of past-due rent and utilities and, in certain cases, up to three months of prospective rent. The project focused particularly on reaching low-income and underserved communities, helping tenants and landlords understand eligibility requirements, access the ERAP application portal, prepare required documentation, and connect with available housing assistance. The initiative began in June 2021 and continued through September 30, 2022, or until available program funds were exhausted. During the program, residents could learn more about eligibility and documentation requirements through the New York State OTDA ERAP website at otda.ny.gov/ERAP or contact the NYS ERAP Call Center at 1-844-NY1-RENT. Applicants who need assistance completing an application or accessing the portal could also call 2-1-1 for referrals to an application assistance provider or contact (716) 923-4386 for additional support.
