University at Buffalo’s Muslim Student Association hosted an event in the Flag Room of the Student Union. The event called “Appreciation Day” was to give thanks to those workers who go unnoticed everyday on the campus of UB. This event is a part of a week long event called Islam Awareness Week where students will be available to speak with anyone in the association about Islam and the Muslim Student Association in general.
The week kicked off on Monday, April 6, 2015 and goes until Friday, April 10th. The MSA has events planned all week long. The group hopes to speak with anyone who may be interested in learning about Islam or just interested in learning about their group and what they do. This gives everyone the opportunity to break down the walls of misinformation about Islam and start to learn the truth about the religion. With the recent tragedies that have occurred around the world a negative view has been placed on Muslims and Islam. Events like these are essential is working towards correcting the misconceptions that are have been broadcast and moving towards peaceful solutions for everyone, Muslim and non-Muslim alike.
At a booth located in the Flag room, some sisters were writing out Thank You cards to be given out to the transportation workers, food prep workers, janitors and other workers who go unnoticed in their line of work throughout the campus. Students continued to come out to the booth throughout the day to chat and learn about Islam as well as to take and distribute some of the Thank You cards to those workers.
Additional events will be hosted all week long. On Wednesday, April 8, 2015 MSA will be hosting a free screening of Malcolm X. On Thursday, April 9, 2015 there will be an event called “Misconceptions about Islam” which aims to address the misunderstandings about Islam. To conclude the week on Friday there will be a Muslim Cultural Bazaar with foods from all over the world and other vendors with items to purchase. A panel of Muslim sisters will be talking about their feelings on Islam and living in America with a Question and Answer session to follow.
Today’s “Appreciation Day” was another amazing event hosted by Muslim Student Association and a great way to recognize and show gratitude to the unnoticed workers on campus.
This event and the others all week will be providing awareness and information about the Muslim Student Association and about Islam. Be sure to check out the events for the rest of the week! Learn more about the Muslim Student Association at UB by clicking here.
