The Organization of Arab Students (OAS) of the University at Buffalo held a FIFA 15 Tournament in the campus’ Student Union Building. The tournament took place on Friday March 13th, beginning at 6 pm and ending at 10 pm.
The cost to enter the tournament was $7 dollars. The format comprised of 16 teams of 2 players each facing off in games of EA Sport’s FIFA 15 video game on the PlayStation 4. The winners of the tournament were awarded $150, with the runners up receiving $50. The OAS also provided all the attendees with free pizza and soft drinks!
Turnout for the tournament was high, as many people came to support their friends and family who were taking part in the tournament. At one point more than 50 people were crowded around the TV screens watching the competitors play FIFA. The tournament was the brainchild of OAS president Durghum Alyasiri who hoped that this would be an opportunity for many people, both Arabs and Non-Arabs, to intermingle and socialize. Durghum said that the goal of the tournament was to create new relationships and bridge the gap between the various cultures and beliefs in the community. This is in line with the OAS’ mission of promoting authentic Arab culture while also correcting any misconceptions.
The tournament was highly successful. Many of the FIFA matches were intense and were often decided in the final few minutes of the game. Participants were involved passionately, with many celebrating enthusiastically after a win or lamenting greatly after a loss. The sportsmanship after the games was stellar, as both sides, regardless of win or loss shook hands and congratulated each other on a good game.
OAS hosted a wonderful night of video games, food and fun. Keep a lookout for the many other events that OAS holds throughout the year and . For more information about the organization please click here.
