The WNY Youth Basketball League Tournament took place this past Saturday, March 21st. The tournament took place in Clark Hall on University at Buffalo’s south campus. It began at 2 pm and continued till 5 pm.
The tournament consisted of 5 teams from various organizations and schools, including both the Universal School and the Al-Rasheed Academy. The two groups that competed were 5th and 6th graders and the other was 7th and 8th graders.
Many youth came out to participate in the tournament and each team had around 10 players. Many friends and family came out in support of the young athletes efforts. The families were very enthusiastic showing their support by cheering loudly.
Brother Shaheed Ali organized the tournament and was and was also a coach of one of the teams. Shaheed claims that his goal was to create a positive outlet for Muslim youth and create a tournament that would bring together many teams. He said there were many tournaments around Western New York, but few that involved any Islamic schools and organizations. He hopes to change that and intends to organize more tournaments for the future.
The tournament was filled with skillful basketball players, loud cheering and a great amount of fun. At the end, only 1 team received the winner’s trophy but every player walked out the gym with their heads held high and smiles on their faces.
Keep a look out for future sports events and tournaments in the Muslim community.
